Why You’re Feeling Stuck – And What To Do About It

Here are some common reasons why you may be feeling stuck right now:

You’re feeling so overwhelmed Work stressors and work/life balance

When feeling stressed out, overwhelmed, or pressure to make decisions or changes, it can be challenging to navigate stressors and life decisions. In those moments, it can be extremely hard to identify what you need to do, how you need to get it done, and what initial steps you need to take. These things are much easier to do when you’re feeling calm, focused, and motivated. If this is the case, having good coping tools and managing your stress level can be helpful.

Analysis Paralysis

Sometimes you may find that you’re feeling stuck because you have been analyzing decisions, “what if”-ing all possible outcomes, and trying to identify and predict things that have not yet happened and may never happen. While problem solving is good, overthinking things can actually be harmful to your stress level and create anxiety symptoms. If this is resonating with you, it may be helpful to seek support through therapy to address symptoms of anxiety and/or unhealthy thinking habits.

You’re avoiding change and discomfort

In many cases, you may already know what you need to do in order to feel better, address problems, and move forward, but you’re resistant. Resistance to change and/or trying to avoid having to make changes or be uncomfortable could be causing you to stay stuck. While change is hard, staying stuck is also hard. If you feel you’re avoiding things, it may be helpful to examine your avoidant behaviors and do things even if they feel uncomfortable. If these steps seem impossible, seeking support with a therapist could be helpful.

You’re waiting for the “right time”

Unfortunately, the “right time” for doing things and making changes can be a myth. There is a very real chance that when it comes to certain decisions, you may never feel 100% ready and motivated to get started. However, that doesn’t mean it’s not worth doing or important to push forward. Waiting until the “right time” may be keeping you stuck indefinitely.

Not addressing the reasons or causes of you being stuck will only keep you in the same place you are now. Therefore, if you want to start feeling better, it’s important to begin working on addressing these barriers.
